It's All About The Money

Warning: Serious post ahead.
Money. Cash. Paisa. Kaas. Duudu. (Hope I got all the vernaculars right...) Anyway, you've probably got the point of this article by now. As the cheesy line goes, "It's all about the money, honey." How true! I think everything done by most people is centered around earning more of the green stuff. Why are we studying? Why do we want to do an M.S. or an M.B.A.? Because we like it and want to learn more about it for the pure and simple joy of enlightenment? Please. Give me a break! We're doing it because it'll help us rake in truck loads of cash. 75% of people at NITK joined the college for its placements. (Different matter that they maybe wondering where on earth the companies have gone courtesy the recession and other personnel factors...) The remaining 25% have joined because it offers a (slightly) better chance for pursuing a higher degree. Ultimately, everyone here wants to make money. Full stop.
But are we (by this I mean the world) doing the right thing? Do we even bother about human relations other than our families? Most of us would readily back-stab a friend for power/money. (With power comes money and vice versa, so they're really the same thing.) Friendship? Who needs that? Friendship is for powerless losers. All we need is a fat bank balance and twenty minions to order around as we see fit. An average software engineer works about 50-60 hours a week. 60 hours every week till they turn 45 when they start working even more. How many times have they stopped to admire the way rain falls? Or to see the moon play hide-and-seek in between wispy clouds? The closest some of them have come is youtube. Sad. Even exercise is indoors in a controlled 24 degree atmosphere. No more green grass, open air, chirping birds, fluttering leaves in a gentle breeze... in short, no more mother Nature. Who needs her? We've got power yoga followed by an expensive laughter session coupled with Rs. 150 (introductory offer) organic energy drinks. We're too busy caught up in money making schemes to bother with anything else. The world could on the brink of an ecological catastrophe and we'll just continue burning oil while make our useless millions. No matter that we're destroying the only home we'll ever have, we just continue pursuing that elusive rupee. No matter that we're dying younger than ever before, (due to stress, cardiac problems etc.) we just continue pursuing that elusive dollar. No matter that we don't have the compassion to at least think about those less fortunate than us, we just continue pursuing that elusive pound. Let's hope we don't pay our pound of flesh for it. Because that would be one really heavy pound.

Great post. But easier said than done. Everybody cares about money only. People don't follow what they want to do just because it doesn't involve as much money. Sad state of affairs, sadly nothing will happen.

That's the point. The world's the way it is because of the way people are and vice versa. It's a perfect catch-22.

sorry to disappoint you my friend, but i guess here you are being a tad too pessimistic. there are people who appreciate the gift of FRIENDS, NATURE and the other things you have mentioned.
I am afraid your views here are way too narrow. although i have a fair idea to why it is so, i'll not bother with the details.
u may want to say that i'm trying to be a idealist o some sort, but all i'm trying to say here is there are other perceptions that i would like you to explore.
and if the whole world decided to be the way it is - give it a thought - maybe there's something good in that too.

I'm being realistic. Consider this scenario. You've been offered a real huge job (with oodles of cash) that your friend has been looking at for ages. He's also more qualified than you at that job and will probably do it much better. But he's not a very likable fellow so the management ignored all his good qualities. Would you give up the job and tell the company he's much better? Ha! Anyone who says they'll do that is lying through their teeth. Simple.

Money is the bottom line. All head for it. Compromise is when along the way you pause to have fun and listen to friends, family and self. Then you will want just how much you really need. Listen to your wish list. Only you owe yourself to fulfill it. If that means a string of degrees then hey, it is better than robbing, cribbing and dreaming...

Also think -
how much one earns is proportionate to how much you work and which is proportionate to where exactly one enters a company which is proportionate to the degrees behind the name
This is not true only when it is the father's company.

Food for thought,
The view at the top is the best - the rest can only complain

Well said. But how much do we really compromise? Do we actually care enough about anything to give up money for it? Excludes family, of course.
The view from the top is indeed great. What if we're blind by the time we get there?

P.S. It would help if you told me who you are... I know I allow anonymous comments but I'd rather people didn't use that option.

GULU....
y do u think the 'so called less fortunate' (as in poor '')are bcause they while away their time thinking about the rest of the world wish they would also work hard and focus on money and at least get the stand to talk down to the less fortunate as in 'poor'and just mayb in the climb to the top some people may notice the rain, sunshine, greenery ,dew drops, fire flies etc not everybody goes blind in the climb to the top few get a better perspective to view things and hence help the less fortunate at least they can now do so cause they have the money ---honey!!

btw... Not every poor person is a lazy, day-dreaming, good-for-nothing sloth. Most of them have not had the opportunity to do well. We're sitting here, using the internet (It's available to just 4.7% of the population) on computers that are worth more than what most Indians are able to earn in a month. You and I cannot even begin to contemplate how hard it must be for them to earn a living. Let's not even try.

P.S. You still have told me who you are -- "honey". I'll need to know who's calling me that :D
